| ---I recorded it by myself W: afternoon, i 888 have said we could switch lab section to whenever it's convenient, so i have been going after lunch. she doesn't care as long as work gets done on time. M: I wish ours will let us do that, i had to be there 8 o’clock in the morning M: Does the travel office at the students center still give out that discount airline compound. coupon. W: If you want one you'd better get there your first stop. What does the women suggest the man do? W: I saw you at the visiting scholar's lecture yesterday I didn't know you are interesting in behavior modification. M: I am not but my psychology professor give us six credits for going, sure i really need it. what can be inferred by man. M: Excuse me, is it the 8 bus suppose to come this way? M: well, yes, but not on weekend, you have to walk over to students center to catch it.what can be inferred by 8 bus. M: I am really worry about my grades? W: You are doing just fine, after all you are only human. What does the women imply about the man? Today I will talk about the result of recent study, this result indicate that the routine cleaning the oil paintings intend to help preserve them, they actually hasten their deterioration. as u know conservator often use strong organic solvent such as alcohol or acetone to clean painting there have been many studies the chemical set for such solvent, The studies was designed to make sure that the solvent don't interact in the harmful way with the chemical in paint or the glue use to seal canvas for example. But the recent study was first to consider the fact that the solvent turn to cool off their surrounding as they evaporate. The new study found that swooping painting with acetone for just 5 seconds can cause the spot of acetone was applied to near freezing temperature, and even that if you never had course in physics. You are probably aware that things contract and expand at the different rates when the temperature changes. That's why running hot water over the jar can make it easier to get the lid off. The metal make expanse more than the glass jar does. Since different layers of painting such as glue, fabric and paint also respond different to temperature changes. It turns out that the use of solvent can subject the painting to very strong mechanical stresses. In other words, even there were no chemical damage, the use of strong solvent can weak painting structurally alternately cause the inter-deteriorate more quickly. between an art professor and a student P: So where are u going to be this summer? S: I got a part time job at the gallery in NewYork. And I xxx taking a joining class at night. P: That's a great, u can learn a lot working in art gallery, and there's no place like NewYork for inspiring artist, I live there myself when i was first at the college. S: i know how lucky i am to have this job but to tell u the truth, I have my heart set on going out west this summer. P: west, u mean California. S: No, The southwest, the desert and everything P: Why the desert? S: You know, George Oki is my favorite artist, and she did such good work out there. P: That' true, but Oki didn't start out in the southwest, you know, she lived in NewYork for years, she did some very impressive painting there. S: I guess you mean skyscraper series , It's funny i never really thought about where she paint them before. P: There was NewYork, She got a lot of when living there, she didn't always enjoy it. But later on she said being around so many artists that help to develop her on artistic vision. S: That's a new way to looking at the city. Now I only find affordable place to live What are the speaks mainly talking about Why does the women want to see the desert in the southwest? Geology class Most of you are probably familiar with the flow of lava that can result from volcanic eruption. Lava is actually being mixture of magma and convince to be produce underground. And many people think this eruption refer only to an explosion, but in geology an eruption is any release of magma. This can and often does common the form of the explosion. But sometimes the magma just blows out with the mouth of volcano. In any events, let's take a look at more some of the other hazards caused by volcanic events. Pyroclastics is the word used to describe the fragmentary rocks that were rejected during the volcanic eruption, the pyroclastics fall is combination of rock fragments and fluid fire lava that built in the air. This project tiles can be just tiny piece of ash or they can be rock fragments typically the size of baseball or volleyball. Although some be so enormous they weigh many tons, the most dangerous of all volcanic events is what we call Pyroclastic flow, in the explosion there are tremendous released pressure and these result in AXXXX super heated mixture of gas and rock This glowing axxx as it caused can reach the temperature of 1000 degree centigrade and can travel as far as 600 kilometers in an hour. It can literally destroy everything as it past. And that's what happen when mountain clay erupt on MARK MILK island in 1902. within the minute after the volcano erupted, the town of SSS was completely wipe out. what does the professor mainly discuss. art history class I was talking before the break about the funding in art in the unite state about where the money comes from. I think some of you may have questions. Yes TOM. You said during the depression the government provide lease work to a lot of artists, just what sort of the work did they do. It depend on the kind of artists you talking about. a lot painter did work for government building, murals, city halls and other public building for example. Sculptors did work to put in the public park that's sort of things. Didn't people get upset about the government spending so much money on art. there were some criticism sure, many people consider the program wasteful they thought that creating public art will not really work by paving the road or putting the building, but the government was concerned with getting as many people employed as possible could I asked about one more thing, I expected art from 1930's to be abstract, but what you show in the slide was pretty realistic. u maybe a little mix up there, abstract expressionism that' s the main of American abstract school is usually associate with 1950. was there dominant artistic style that these depression era artists used let's look at few more slides maybe that will show you, also there was an exhibition in Washington a few years ago about this art, so I put the catalog from the show on the reserve in the library. If any of you want to see more example of this work go over and take a look. what is the main topic of the discussion what is the students mistaken about what criticism was directed against the public art program Biology I like to start today lecture by challenging some of the myths about the certain animals consider to be predators of human, take a case of wolf, people fear wolf because the tales how wolves attacking eat people walk into the woods. In fact, if you encountered the wolves in the wild. it is probably to run away. Another animal run their accuse to harm people is gigantic octopus. Story has been told about the terrifying gigantic octopus attacking and eating the entire ship. But like the crab some such, you don't have much to fear for a gigantic octopus even the hungry one. One mis XXX by such stories concerns the size of octopus, biology report that on average it hasn’t on XX 2 and half meters. Large certainly, but hardly ship eating size. XXX being in the tank. The gigantic octopuses have numbers of talents that make it especially adapted escaping. It has no skeleton structure, so despite it’s large size it can squeeze to a hole as small as 5 centimeters wide and if it’s caught for an example in the mouth of the shark. It can pull away leaving one or more its arms. They will grow back or it has been pursued. it squirts black ink which some scientists believe that take on the form of another octopus and thus confuse the predator and if that’s not enough the gigantic octopus have the communing like ability to change the skin color to match its surrounding. Why is the speak talking about the wolf and the gigantic octopus? What does the lack the skeleton structure allows gigantic octopus to do? How does this gigantic octopus got it’s bad reputation. According to some scientists how does the black ink help the gigantic octopus to escape it’s predators. W: Here we are at registration again, I can’t believe how much the tuition has gone up. M: I know it’s ridiculous. You know my cousin Anne pays nothing to got her school in Kentucky. W: Nothing maybe I should transfer there. M: You can’t, only the students from certain part of Kentucky can go. It’s only for students from APPLION mountains area. W: So with no tuition how do they run the school. M: Well, they get a lot of donation W: And that pays for everything? M: Well, they also get some money from the government and besides that all the students are required to work at the college that why the college doesn’t need to hire a lot of side-works. W: yeah, that will help decrease the expenses, sure what kind of job do they do. M: My cousin helps to clean the dorm, I think his roommates wash dishes in the cafeteria things like that. W: That sounds great! Come to think that I heard that something in Georgia called hope scholarship. M: hope scholarship what’s that? W: I think they used state Lottery money to give free tuition. But not everyone from Georgia qualify. You need at least B average in high school. M: I should apply for that I had really good grades in high school. W: No, you had to be in Georgia. M: Just my luck (It's just my luck.我命里已注定这样) What does the speaks mainly discuss? How does the college in Kentucky help the student financially? Anthropology class, the class has been talking about cultures of North America’s native peoples Before we continue you should understand an important concept. That is the notion of culture area. A culture area is not colony of artist but the geographic area inhabited by different people with similar cultures. A culture area is relatively consistent in term of land features. For instance, the land is continually mountains or flats and climate. There are similarities in the kind of plants and animals XXX. I take what I call the bottom-up approach to study the culture. That doesn’t mean that I go to those sites or people are dig in for artifact but rather it means I think of culture as something it grows out of the daily needs of people’s life, like finding food or protecting themselves against weather. The routine and social order the people create in order to deal with these things form the culture. So Inuit people living what’s now Alaska, people whose surrounding are cold and not fit for agriculture and who depend on fishing. You can image how their routines differ from AlXX people who live in warm desert region. So if that appear to everyone we can continue. So moving on. Anthropologists feel that in what is now in USA and Canada there are 9 culture areas. We will examine all of them in the next few weeks but for now let’s start from our own area. What is the purpose of the talk? According to the professor what’s one crucial difference between Inuit and AlXX people. According to the professor what’s the bottom up approach of the study of culture? What does people prepare to discuss next The settling of inland from here in Canada involve many coincidences and those which making money was involved were particular bitter. A good case in point is the intense rivalry between 2 major fur trade companies around the beginning of 19 century. The Hudson bay company had royal chart that on the nobly in the area where the operating cost were low. In addition to keeping any competition of the area where doing business was the least expensive, royal chart also give the excess to long term credit from bank of the England. Other bonus that full were original management comminute and support for highly places politician. Their rival the upstart northwest company of Montreal has none of these advantages but they did have brave men who didn’t hesitate to go into untried territory. Their profits depended on constantly moving on. Always going to the new areas that has great number of animals. This increase the transportation cost of course and keep their profits low. When challenged by the northwest company Hudson bay reacted by taking on the tactics of its rival by also hiring people willing to adventure into new areas. Then they undercut northwest by increasing the value of goods they trade to India for first. They could afford to do these because their wealthy backers would accept the low profits for a time in order to squeeze the northwest out. What is the professor main point? What does Hudson bay company respond to competition? According to the professor what is the main advantage does the Hudson bay company hand. What approach didn’t the northwest company used to compete with Hudson company. There is nothing you can do to escape history, perhaps you don’t realize it but you are always surrounded by things that connected you to the past. Take for an example something as simple as barrette the people sometimes wear in their hair. It goes back 10,000 years. Ancient graves in Asia contain hairpin made a bone and iron, silver gold. In function, they are little different from what we used today. Clear patron is set to prefer hairpins of ivory. That was decorate with Jewels. Roman hairpins were sometimes hollow inside make them better to carry poison in. Now the modern Barb-pin owe its name and shape to 17 century French court where wigs were in fashion. They made wearing the wigs easier as they were used to pin the people’s real hair very close to the head. That was call barb hair. The U shaped pin that facilitated these was called a barb with pin which became barb-pin in England 18 century. Then in the 19 century, the barb-pin that still used today, the one made steel wire began to be mass produced. What is the main topic of the talk? According to the professor why did people often wear barb pins in France in the seventeen century. Why were Roman hair pins sometimes hollow? What is the purpose of the talk? Health problem caused by parasite A parasite is the organism that live in or on another organism called the host. During the talk, listen for where the parasite normally lives, how the parasites infect and harm humans. How the proposed solution is supposed to work. Let’s look another way the health agency to fight in parasite’s diseases. One alternative to drugs and pesticides is to use biologic agency. In other words, if the parasite cause problems, you find something that eats parasite itself or something that eat parasite normal host then you turn something lose in the parasite habitat. For an example, consider the SSSiII, XXX is the infection with parasite worm called XXX. Normally the host for these XXX worm is the kind of fresh water snail. In the African country Kenny worms frequently infect humans who expose to water from ponds where the snails live. This contact commonly occurs when people give their cattle water or wash their clothes in the ponds. Infected by 2 millions Kenny most children are infected When XXX to human host, the worm lays eggs and these can result in the internal bleeding, fever, fatigue and sometimes death. There are still necessary of host XXX, because XXX eggs can only hatch inside snail. If you already infected, you can take the drug to kill the worm but the drug is expensive and it’s easy to get re-infected when you go back to the ponds. Instead the researchers try to eliminate worm normal host, the snail, by introducing Louis Anne crayfishes into the ponds where the worms and snails lives. Now as you can see a crayfish looks something like miniature lobsters and it loves to eat snail. Snail are rich in calcium which crayfishes eat for its own shell and crayfish already abundant in nature Kenny river they were imported in very early 1970 and they are easy to find. So crayfish end up being chief perfect ways to reduce raceive XXX. If they do though it would be the first time a biologic agent has been successfully used to control a parasite. What is the topic of the talk? Why crayfish can control the worms What are advantages of control the worm with the crayfish rather than the drug? What does the speaker say about biologic agency such as crayfish? I haven’t see your friend Mike for a while, how is he doing? He transfer to state college last semester, you have been busy haven’t you? What does the man imply? It’s not going to storm on Saturday, is it? The lab club suppose to a party on the front lawn. Yeah, if I heard is right you had better find a large room somewhere. What the woman suggest the man do? You will be taking fieldtrip to local Marine and that fieldtrip will take place next week. Before we go there are few things I like to point out to you. Particularly I like to talk about barnacles. As we discussed a barnacle is a shell fish usually small less been inch length. It related to lobster, shrimps and crab. However unlike those other shellfish, barnacle are considered silent organisms. That is they are potentially damaging NXX. You know because they attach themselves to worth piers, rocks and ship bottoms as we see next week in marina. And it even attach themselves to other creatures such as turtles and whales. Now barnacle use very powerful cement it’s a self made cement to attach themselves. In fact, it’s one of the most powerful glues known. Paleontologist says even discovered fossils from hundreds fifteen million years ago. That have barnacle still attached . So as you can see it’s very very powerful and long lasting cement. Scientists today are even try to duplicate that powerful adhesive. Only a few countries use barnacle for food, people in Chile, Brazil, Spain and Italy harvest and eat the clam like GOOSE barnacle. An, however there are one type barnacle found here in the USA, on west coasts. The riches weighted 3 pounds and actually grow up to five inches tall, It tastes like lobster or crab. What is the purpose of lecture? According to the professor how are the barnacle different from other shellfish? What do you need to find barnacle on the west coasts of USA? What does professor mention fossils? W: what’s the matter? I never see you look so tense? M: I am just frustrated. That’s all. I have been worked on lab report for my biology class for hours and the results keep coming out long. W: Did you use right procedures? M: Yeah, that’s no problem, it’s just, well, it just, you know every time I do the statistics I get different results. Did you ever take biology? W: No I fill my science requirement with physics, I XXX don’t care for biology especially I ? section. I must pass down it in high school. We had to cut open that. M: Ok, I get the picture, I a bit ? squish myself but the biology require the least math which is the my best subject. I don’t see why we even have to take science class which we have not major in it. I am never going to use this the real life. W: well that’s not the point really, a college graduation suppose to be right round it. You know with broad education, the economy specialize in grad school. M: Sure if I ever get there. It’s just seem that I run XX one biology lab report can XXXX brilliant career in sociology. W: You don’t be silly; you will manage somehow. See how come you don’t have the result for one of your freeXXX to write down. M: Whoops! I must forgot to add it in. No wonder my figures were messed up! What is the man’s problem? Why does man object to taking the science course? Next page High animal like dogs, horses even human being look like their parents when they born. There are some mini-changes that occurs as this animals grow. But the basic form of the structure stay the same. This is called direct development which is quiet different from metamorphosis. Many low animals like ants, flies and sea XXX emerge from the eggs. They don’t look at all like their parents. Only after series of major changes do they take on the characteristic of their parents. Butterfly and moth provide the best example of what biologist call complete metamorphosis because they pass 4 distinct stages of extreme changes. Here is the illustration of butterfly at the each of the four stages of complete metamorphosis. The first stage is the egg. Butterflies usually lay their eggs on plants and these plants provides food when they transform into larvae, the second stage. After about month in this stage, a butterfly larvaes spin the cocoon of silk around itself. A larvae in the cocoon is also called pupa. So it’s known as the pupa stage. The pupa stage is the period of inactivity when larvae structure evolves into adult structure. Depending on the species, the pupa stage can last anywhere from a few days to several months. When the pupa finally mature into the adult butterfly, it pushes its way out of its cocoon and cross onto the twig or tree land and pump the blood into the trunk and wing until they are full size and strong. Now some insects like grasshopper and roaches have only 3 stages—egg, larva and adults. When an animal skips the pupa stage, it’s called incomplete metamorphosis. It’s not only insects that undergo the metamorphosis. Frogs and toads are the most well know example of other form-changing animal. Frogs lay their eggs in water and eggs hatch into tadpole. A tadpole look more like little fish because it has the tail and no legs. But it gradually lose its tail and develop into four legs frog. She had become the first woman to across Atlantic a flight lasted almost 24 hours. American other pilot Trans Lingberg have been the first who attempt to cross Atlantic flight and he accomplished this feat only a year before Amelia. Unfortunately between these 2 famous flights 14 other pilots had died attempting. Beginning their circumnavigation of world at Oakland California Airheart and Amelia set on Miami Florida on May 31 1937. Neta Brazil was their last destination before crossing the Atlantic 13 hours later they touched down in Sandovis Senegal. During the transatlantic crossing has not banned with foul weather and mini mechanic mishap the team rested and then headed out across Africa. Averaging 4 to 5 hours sleep each night, they took flight before down and touch down only to keep the plane’s condition spotless. After Africa coming India then Southeast Asia and Australia. In early July 1937, 30 days and 19 thousand miles from their starting point the PXXX were shout on they crowed spectator on the island Newgenee. That day Alheart become the American hero and inspiring women of that time to look beyond what the world had to offer them to what they can offer themselves. Biology class The national bird of USA, the bald eagle has come to symbolize the freedom, power and majesty. With its long bird wing up to 8 feet, the bald hold the commanding present to the sky. The bald eagle range across north American and include the Arctic tundra. Humid fresh lakes and rivers, the tropic swamp of mangrove of Florida and even the desert of Barha peninsula. The eagle’s main diet is fish and seabird. But during the migrate period far from water, the eagle were through to wide range of prey. When hunting, the eagle were perch on the tall spot overlooking the water scanning the surface for fish. Once the prey is seen, the bald will soar down and shallow glide over the surface of the water. Finally the bald will flow with feet down and grab the fish just below the surface of the water. The fish will be carried away to a perch to be eaten. In Alaska, during the salmon spawning season, bald eagles gather in great numbers to feed on the dying fish. The mating of bald eagle occurs in the air. The ritual begins as the male and female fly the elaborate EXX circles around each other. The male will then swoop down on the female and two will lock talons. Lock together the birds tumble toward the ground, seeming out of control. Breaking free only at the very last minute to fly off separate directions. Female eagles are larger than male in order to defend their young against the aggressive males. Eagles nest are reused yearly and may become huge from rebuilding over to 30 feet cross and 24 feet deep. 2 eggs are generally laid at one time and the first chick to hatch is fed first. Because the reason of insufficient demanded food, the large chick will bully the other chick into starvation thereby increasing the chance of survive of stronger chick. Is it OK that XXX and I take your tend with us this weekend. Go ahead, my brother and I use the tent last weekend when we were camping and it work fine. Communication --- the birth of motion picture. More than any other form of public entertainment, Americas go to the movies by the millions each year. So when did we first develop this passion for the movies. Well let all days back to 1819 and Tom Edison’s vision of creating a motion picture machine. They would be sure form of entertainment for wealthy American. But those most captivated by Edison’s newest invention were not the richer but the working class denizens of American cities. VXXX theater, places were live performance describes act, dance and song offer the instant audiences to test the popularity of Edison’s invention which was called vitascope. In the places like New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh the middle class form the initial custom base. House wife on daytime shopping trips, office work on lunch break and evening theater girls wanting entertainment after dinner. But 25 cents of each, the film excluded the majority of urban dweller--- the working class from attending the shows. As well, middle class customers view the film as the novelty and only occasionally visit them. Preferring to visit the theater for evening and matinee place. In response, cheaper theaters know as nickel movie theaters or nickelodeon came to existence. The working class immediately flock to the nickelodeons all times a day and theater owners may profits like never before. From 1890 to 1910, waves of south and east European immigrant flood the European center of new industrialize of American. Four characteristics of film made the motion picture as a perfect form of entertainment for them. Because of long working hours on the average 11~12 hours a day, 6 days a week. Working class entertainment had to be short, well packaged, easily accessible within every neighborhood and above all cheap. The best arrangement had four or five nickelodeons located side by side to provide families the chance seeing different films. Each was which lasted 15 to 20 minutes; all was in the walking distance of their homes. Psychology class Shocked by the massacre uncovered in the concentration camps of Poland and Germany during world war 2. The question then came how could common ordinary Germans fathers, brothers, uncles, sons and grandfathers take part in the such a extremely ex-brutality against humanity. In response, in the 1960, Yale psychology professor Stanliee Newgrom performed psychological experiment that would one completed even eerie answer to that question. Not only involved Yale students Newgrom advertise on the New Hamption newspapers of volunteers willing to accept payment for their participation in the study described as testing to effective punishment on learning and memory. Each volunteer who might be called volunteer A was directed to administrate increasing the levers of electric shocks to the second volunteer or test subject. Volunteer A was do so only with instructor to by research scientist. What volunteer A did not known was that the electric shock was not real and the test subject was only actor and that test was actually about what they would intentionally continue to issue increasingly powerful shock of electricity without complaining or refusing such as common German had done. In his book, obedience to authority, Newgrom details with unwelcome surprise the fact that some volunteers refuse to continue the experiment when they notice signs of extreme discomfort in their volunteer B. Most volunteers continue to increase the lever of electricity when told to do so by the research scientist. Therefore average Americans are equally potential for brutality as ordinary Germans doing in World war 2. In closing Newgrom state that in situation were individuals can assume no responsibility or guilt in performing what is considered either a crime or barbarous act. They would do so when ordered to by authority and sadly they who were do so far outnumber those would not. Geology class Most people know that the glacier is a large solid sheet ice that advance and retreat very very slowly changing the shape of any landscape it’s covered. Glaciers are found on land as snow falls. At first, the snow flakes are pointed and feathery as they accumulate they become compacted and begin to take on the round and grainy shape which allows air to be trapped inside. This air sometimes analyzed by the scientists who study ancient atmospheric air. As the snow continue to fall the pressure builds and eventually the underline snow is compacted to a point when all of the air is squeezed out forming a solid sheet of ice. This process continues until the sheet of ice reaches its depth of approximately 20 meters. At this height, the pressure form the enormous weight may cause the ice crystal to form the sliding layers. This sliding layer acts as a sort of track which allows the glacier to move. A process know as creeping. Other glaciers creep by the sliding over a paper’s level of water called motor water which forms underneath. Glaciers can creep anywhere from few inches to hundreds of feet per year. There are 2 general classifications of glaciers which include continental glaciers and mountain glaciers. Continental glaciers extend our word in a continue sheet over a very large area and arctic is the example of continental glacier. Mountain glaciers are familiar to anyone who have ever been to or see the photograph of XXX ridge such as Rocky Mountains in the American west. I just want to with working doctor Caw in the Literature class. Really? I was beginning to think I was the only one. I hear you working 24 hours a week this semester, guess to eliminate soccer uh? It’s not that much, plus the boss let me work flexible hours, they don’t count me out yet. What does the women mean? Geology class I also hear my friends say that the days pass much more quickly than they used to but geologically speaking just the opposite true. In fact, the complete day which now last 24 hours actually used much shorter only about 18. How do we know that? Because of the number of finally strata rocks like this. rock form belong ancient shorelines almost billion years ago. The TXX lines of these samples show us layer of light and dark formed by dust blow over the shoreline from the landsite. Alternating was the mud and sand deposited by the waves. So the space between one dark strata and the next emphases of the time between on month high tide and the next and very in fitness of layer show the circle of the season as well. Together the data indicate there were fewer months for year way back then. 老早就,很久以前 that means the moon was moving more slowly than as it revolved around the earth. So what caused the moon do speed up so much over last billion years. It must be the tides. Think about it as the gravity of moon pose on the oceans to form the tides. All that water is also pulling on the moon and with each rotation it makes the moon move a tiny bit fast. At the same time, like the brakes on the wheel of bicycle the drag caused by the moon’s gravity makes the earth turn just a tiny bit slower. And so after a billion years, one rotation meaning one day takes a lot longer than it once did. What is the main topic of talk What does the professor say about the origin of rock samples What was learned by studying rock XXX in class What does the professor mention the bicycle wheel Librarian and students Mrs. Preska, I am TinXXX. Please in TinXXX. The work study staff office call to let me know you will come. You are interested in job here in the coming semester. Yes, I was hoping the library might be able to use me. XX with me some help from work study students. Can you tell me a little by yourself? Let’s see, I am sophomore I live off campus and I major in business. Fine, what about your work experience. I have been the lifeguard for 3 summers of city pool, here on campus I work last year in the cafeteria. This semester I am at the computer center 3 evening a week but I prefer the afternoon job. We have the opening for someone to share books 4 afternoons a week, a total 16 hours. Does that suit you? Perfectly, my courses in next semester all meet in the morning. The job yours then. Please read this information before your begin, your first day of work will be 2 weeks from today. Thank you very much, I will see you then. Why is the man talking to the woman? When was the man beginning working at the library? I am on earth on that to deadline, one of my professor is away and probably weren’t sent her letter of recommendation for 2 weeks. Oh, That’s just the formality just sent the job application form What does the man imply? That copy machine in the student lounge is a real pain! Why? What’s the problem? You mean it! Even just adding paper! Have you looked at the manual, at CCKK right next to the machine! Biology seminar All right, Janyson Clod have been scientists to leave part of our discussion today on animal cognition, are you both ready? Well, Crow I looked into two making abilities of wild animals, in the academicism article about how are scientist means Gavin Hands has claimed to discover ability of crows with superior tool making abilities. He claims that the tools these birds make are different from tools that other animals make in several ways. For one thing, the crows make different kinds of tools for different situation. Also the tools are very specificated. For an example, they design tools with hooks, which they used when they are looking foods and third. Ah, how about was the third thing? He claims that crows may actually intentionally modify their tools to a specific shape before using them. Other animals like sea auks do use stone to pound open the shell of crab and another prey and chimpanzees have been observed have puzzle be modifying leaves to use as an umbrellas but this activities but these activities don’t meet all 3 criterias for plant tool making. Yeah, And these crows even keep track of their tools when they change hunting sites for an example, they generally take their tools with them and when they eat they usually hold onto the tool with their feet. Interesting! And what’s the significance of Hunt’s study? Well, some scientists has argued that the crows may have been born with this behavior but if Hunt can prove that they really do intentionally modify their tools, their behavior will be massively different from that of other animals and could be considered as cognitive. Right! No other wild animal has the ability to design, make and standardize the tools. This ability was stored to be unique to human. What does the Hand’s study show about the crow? What is one criticism of Hand’s study? How do the crow keep track of their tools? What the matter? I never see you look so tense! New Cassette I try for a half hour to print my paper on that laser printer downstairs but it kept jamming, do you have any suggestion. That’s certainly new to me. So you can’t be completely reliable for me. What does the man imply? I ask you to let you know that your paper on 18 Century France show the particularly good understanding of subject matter. Actually, I didn’t have much time to do the research, so I was worry you were calling me in criticism. What can be inferred about student? I just need one more class to complete my schedule, I can’t decide between calculus and music appreciate. Well, I am not counselor but you do want to be an engineer and I don’t think the music course is going to help you out very much. (help sb. outv.帮助某人解决难题) What does the women imply the man should do? W: I think you would enjoy my geology class this morning. M: don’t bet on it, I never care much about rocks. W: but you do care about dinosaurs I recall and today we discuss a geologic evidence about what kill off the dinosaurs at least here in North America. M: Oh, sure they got a hit by a comet or something I think. W: Well, Yeah, about 600 million years ago, a huge comet did crash into earth on New Mexico and it plowed out as an enormous crater over a hundred miles across. M: and that’s what why death the dinosaurs, right? W: Well, it wasn’t exactly the impact itself but what happed right afterward. You see researchers figured out from the shape of the crater that the comet must be coming in pretty low across the Atlantic and so right after the impact a huge cloud of fire raspier must swept clear across the north America, all in just a few minutes. And that what probably kill off not just the dinosaurs but a lot of different species of plants and animals. M: Amazing! W: Yeah! And even 2000 miles from the impact, plants would be burst in the flame. M: And the fire that intense must destroy just about everything! W: well, above ground anyway! M: above ground? Say! I wonder it better explains that why the dinosaurs all disappeared but some other animals like maybe small mammal live underground manage to survive. W: make sense! Anyhow! Latter on the tons of dusts that thrown away out into the atmosphere may have caused some globe climate change. So eventually the comet probably affected plants and animals species all around the world but nowhere as much as North America. What are the speak mainly discussing? What evidence did the researchers give to support their theory Based on the conversation why did some of the animals species survive the extinction of the dinosaurs? To study painting by all masters, experts often make use the modern technologies, today let’s talk about one example of that X-rays. These days X-rays equipment is no longer found just in hospitals and dentist’s office. Now it’s also widely used in the study of work of art and it leads to exciting discoveries. For instance, an art historian in Ohio discovered that the 2 famous paintings now held in different museum were originally part of same painting. Probably sawed apart by some greedy art dealer. X-rays show several header figures that had been split between the two canvases. In the another famous painting, a portrait of young boy, and X-rays reviewed the artist had once painted a small white dog where now only rocks and grass can be seen. In this case, the technology give us the insight into how the artist thinking developed and changed during the process of painting a picture. Perhaps the most important question in artist history they have to address is whether the particular work was actually painted by a certain master artist or perhaps by a less well known printers or imitators. They ? have brush dropper back in X-rays review may lead to definite answer to this question but not always. Let me tell you now about two respected experts and how each use X-rays of one famous Dutch portrait to support radically different conclusions about it. What is the main topic of the talk? What were the professor probably talk about the next? What did the art historian Ohio discover about 2 famous paintings According to the professor, what is probably the most important question about the painting that maybe resolve using X-rays. W: So have you like living in the renovated dorms? M: They have much difference with old dorms just some new pane and windows, the windows are nice so they shut off the noise really well. The street just outside but I can barely hear the traffic. W: MM, it must be good windows, I bet they must have double panes and glass, They shut off a lot of noise that the single pane wouldn’t stop. M: yeah, I wish I had something just the factor between me and my neighbor’s room. Sometimes he turns up the music so aloud and I have the trouble to get into sleep. Anyway I guess that’s better off for the people who be moving into the new dorms. Did you see how the ? thin wall there that they putting up between those rooms. W: I haven’t seen but I did read something about in the campus newspaper. They are supposed to be better than the thick concrete wall you got here. M: Better? How? W: Well, what they doing is separating each room with 2 thin layer of plastic boards and each one has nailed to a different frame. That way they byXX independently. M: oh I see, so the sound from the one room doesn’t just by-RXX the wall and go directly into next room. There is gutter between 2 layers of wall. W: That’s right. M: I still stuck with this neighbor and I am not sure what to do. W: You ? heavy bear wall doesn’t help. You should hang something up like fur rags or some decorated cross. That would act like a kind of the second wall and absorb some sound. M: I got some extra you can use, if you like. W: I appreciated, anything could get a good night sleep. What are the speaker mainly discussion? What would the man probably do to improve his room? M.…. W: I wrote that down somewhere on my note. M: I got right here! Let’s see, they start off the egg, the ant lays the eggs after.. I don’t remember how long they turn.. W: Yeah, yeah here is it. The egg are very tiny and they hatch in a few days and become larva M: and then they transfer into pupa. That’s one not move at all and then they.. W: Oh. Oh Oh.. I remember something about the pupa stage that’s before they are full in mature and they can get captured by other ants and they become sort of slaves in other ants colony. M: Yeah, doctor Lois review the term slave-make ants, they are be slave-make ants but go into other nest and steal the pupa. So when the pupa grow to adults they are like the slave of the other ants. And it’s slave, they actually do the work that the other ants would have to do themselves. W: Right! But most of the slave-make ants they could do the work for themselves couldn’t they? M: I guess so, but then there are those Amazon ants. W: Omm.. The amazon ants, Oh, those were slave-make ants that are actually depended on ants they slaved. Now why is that again. M: Let me see, here it is. The size of their mandible yeah, it was because to have those really long curvy mandibles. W: Oh, yeah! Those are jaws. M: Right! Those mandibles are so big and the amazon ants can even get their own food or dig nests for themselves. So they need the slaves to get the food and dig the nests for them. W: That make sense! Now could we go back to the part on how they catch the slaves. We were talking before about how some slave-make ants go into other nest and bring back pupa to become slave. But they can also take over the whole colony right? M: Yeah, the queen ant after she mates, she is carrying her own eggs what she does, she goes into another colony of another specie. She takes over the colony and those other ants the slaves start working for her and then she lays her eggs. W: but the colony she is there is already got its own queen, so… M: yeah, if she doesn’t cooperate, the slave-make ant will kill that queen and then when she hatches own eggs they become adults and they become slave-make too. W: and then they go out to rob other ants nest for pupa to bring back as its slave. What are the student’s mainly discussion What does Amazon ants need other ants species to do for them What happens to most of the eggs of slave-make queen Talk about the Garlelar XX to the planet Jupiter, Galarlay was launched in 1989 and we had to wait until the end of the 1995 for the spacecraft and its probe to reach Jupiter. Of course, there are some exciting moment for a long wait too, I first visit the Doctor Black astronomy class back to Galorly for just visit AXX BXX. And it’s able at that time to bring the Galarlay’s images of AXX gas XX. That was the first time we got up-closed look at AXX, it was just amazing but we are also some disappointments. In the April of 1991 we realize that one of the antennas that was suppose to transmit data was not function. That mean we have to rely on the small antennas to give us data and ?? we use that been quiet clear to RXX what we received from Galarlay. As I mention before at the end of 1995 the Galarlay probe finally enter Jupiter atmosphere we knew Jupiter’s position at the time was made communication at spacecraft difficult. So we decide to suspend data transmission. After waiting about half a year we began to receive data about the Jupiter’s atmosphere in satellites we were continued to collect for 2 years and now if you all were waiting for—direct images of Jupiter. What does the speaker mainly discuss? Why did the scientist has to wait for half a year for Galarlay’s images of Jupiter? What does the speaker describe as the disappointment? What will the speaker probably do the next? Earth Science: We have been talking about some of the affects that the human beings SXX on the earth. One that you may not be aware of is that we are actually began to change the length of the day. The other we say that one day at XX time years need to spend completely around on axis. And the imagery line once to the center of the earth and not the sun. And of course there are a lot of physical causes that can affect the spin of the earth rotation but there were only one that can direct result of the human activity. Since 1950, human beings have built about ten thousand artificial reservoirs all of the world. These reservoirs have redistributed tremendous amount of the earth water. When they are used to be in the area near the equator and the imagery line on surround the middle of the earth. It’s now the reservoirs in the areas of different latitudes. The latitude matters because iXX the earth and axis, the equator contains the areas on the earth that are the farthest way from axis. So water has been redistributed from the equator areas, then wherever the water is, to it’s close to the earth axis. It’s like when ice skaters perform spins when those skaters put their arms enclose to their bodies they spin fast. So the earth is spining fast because the reservoirs have redistributed the water close to it’s axis. And because the earth was spinning fast, since 1950 the length of day has decreased by dot 8 million of second. I know that doesn’t sound like much but significant in that this is the first time that human beings ever had mirable affect on the earth motion. What dose the speakers mainly discuss? Why does the professor describes the spin of the ice skater? What does the professor say has happened to the length of the day since 1950? Why does the professor discusses reservoirs? Great music tradition called the blue. In the just a minute, we will get to hear the voice of great blue performer, one of my all time favorite singers and that’s BASSY Smith, first all, let me tell you a little about her. Daisy Smith grew up in the south in Tennessee and while she was still a teenage, she start touring the country with other black performance and making the name for herself. By 1923 she was making records for a major recording studio and selling hundreds and thousands copies and soon she was singing at sold out performance at the theaters in city after city was huge overflow crowds outside, often filling the streets and blocking traffic. It was really something. A couple of years later, she and Migratte Lois Amerstorus made an unforgettable recording of the Saints Lois Blues. And few years after that Saints Lois Blues was also the name Daisy Smith only movie. One of the very early talking pictures, try to see it sometime if you can. From then upon until her death, Daisy Smith kept on writing and recording the song and singing the blue in concerts all over the country altogether she made hundreds and sixty records. We are going to play one now and as we do please listen to the passion of that wonderful voice of hers. I think you are able understand why Lois Amerstrons said Daisy Smith “ she has the music in her soul.” What is the talk mainly about? What is the special about movie “Saints Lois Blues”? Now we figure out the requirement for the electives then. I like to take one other business course but I am sure which one? How are about an economics course? I took one last semester and got enough of it. Oh, that’s right I remember you tell me about it. Let’s see what else you need? I need another English course and I think about taking a poetry class. Let me see, the prerequisite for all the poetry classes is the English composition. I took that my first semester Well, modern American poetry fit in your schedule With Doctor Tenor Mhen That be great! I heard all about her from my roommate the English major. This should up to be a pretty good semester for you, what else do you need to take? I have to take one more math course that I had put it off. I heard that calculus is really tough. It is! But you may want to take it and just take it for a course this semester. That’s not a bad idea! I just hope it doesn’t affect my grade point average! What is the main role of the Genet’s academic advisor. Under what’s circumstance does the advisor recommend that Genet takes calculus My history professor has just schedule the study session this afternoon, I hope you don’t mind. But we make our presentation in culture anthropology tomorrow morning! What can be inferred about the speaks? I really hate walking into class late, at least the professor didn’t seem to notice! I am not so sure about that, she sound a kind of angry to me! What does the man mean? The forecast says it like rain on Sunday, do you think we should reschedule the architecture fieldtrip. I mean that all be outdoors walking around the city. We will just tell everyone to come prepared! What will the man probably tell the people who plan to go on the fieldtrip? I think I will edit the campus newspaper this semester! If I were you, I will reconsider, that’s a big job and you already overcommited. What does the woman tell the man? Do you suppose I can sign for 5 classes this semester instead of 4? I am quiet sure that there are no rules that say you can’t! What does the women mean? I fill up an application for off-campus housing that you were doing last week? Do you remember if you had included the name and phone number of the manager of the dorm that you live now? I asked in the housing office they told me it’s optional! What does the women imply? I walk to class with you if you wait for a second. I just had to make a quick phone! Ok! But we will be later if you don’t shake your leg! What does the women mean? I am so annoyed, I haven’t got my schedule for next semester yet! You know, I was registered by phone last month! Mmh, well, the registration office is right down the hall, maybe they got you address wrong or something. What does the man imply the women should do? If this where I get the books professor Ronald’s put on reserve. Not as I known, but you might want to check the main desk, just in case! What does the woman suggest the man do? Meteorology First of all, let’s look at why the temperatures tend to be high in the city than the rural area. This happens because almost 50 percent of the urban areas are comprised of hard surfaces like pave street, parking lot, buildings and roof tops. As the result, any amount of rain fall is quickly repelled by this service and carried away by storm drains and gutters. Especially water just doesn’t have the chance to stand around until evaporate and during the process of the evaporation that heat is removed from the air. So in cities where there is less evaporation temperatures will be higher and of course there are also be issue of added heat coming from building heating system, from industry, cars and even human body. Even we being in the city itself, temperatures vary significantly. For an example, in winter, street that be a lot of use will be 2 or 3 degree warmer than less travel streets. In place where car sits for a while like a stop light and be in another 3 degrees warmer. On the other hand, low spots in the city where cold air collect will be much colder than the higher places. Rain and snow fall are also affected by urbanization. Cities tend to get quiet less snowfall than the surrounding countryside because of the warm temperature in the city but the rain fall in the city can be 5 to 10 percent higher. That happens because of 2 factors. First, the warm city temperature, second the large number of dust particles in the urban air. It seems dust particles are important requirement for ??coming session. The water vapor in the atmosphere is able to change to liquid by planning to dust particles suspended in the air. So where there are the high number of dust particles condensation take place more easily. That’s why fogs and clouds are usually more frequent around the city. Once condensation takes place the rainfall is not far behind. In the London area, for an example, thunderstorms can produce 30 percent more rainfall than the surrounding countryside. Some urban PXXXgist go so far as they argue that they can see a pattern increasing the rainfall during the workweek. They believe rainfall amounts are small around the weekend because the dust particle generate by cars and factories are reduced. What is the talk mainly about? According the professor what is one reason temperature vary in cities? What pattern do climatologist believe is emerge in cities? What does the professor say about fog and clouds? I really like my sociology class. It’s a seminar on message in sociology. That’s some terribly exiting. I thought so too at first. After we being reading different research study we find out about the conclusions, their finding and we also discuss the details that how they do the study. Some of reading has been fascinating. For an example, well, we just read the study that was done in elementary school. A school where a lot of students were failing. When the research went into the school, they though they would find out how teacher low expectations contribute to students doing so poor in the school. I think I hear of that. Then when student don’t perform well in school it’s called self-fulfilling(自我实现的,自力达到目标的) something. Right self-fulfilling prophecy. (本身自然会实现的预言) In this school, there was one first grade teacher they call her Mrs. A who had very positive affect on student. The researcher talk to the student after they become an adults and examine the student’s school records. Students who has been in Mrs. A ‘s class were much more like to do well in the school and they were more likely to be successful as adults than students who is being in the other first grade classes in that school. What was the teacher the??gry? did the researchers ever find out? She just didn’t give up on anyone no matter how long it took to reach him. She also communicate to the students how important education is. The adults in the study all mention this when they were interviewed some 20 years later. What are the speaker mainly discussion. What is important about the elementary school that the man is discussion? What was Mrs. A’s success based on? For the next couple of weeks, we will be focus on how the animals communicate each other. After now, we had rather NXX of view of XX warnings that animals give each other. Some research indicate this communicate is a lot more complex than we traditionally thought. Let me give you an example, TaKKdogs, of course they are not really dog at all, but one of the rodents who live under the plain in the western part of Unite States. In case you can’t visualize them, let me describe them to you. They are about dig squirrels but without the bushy tail and unlike the squirrels, they isn’t hold in the ground and they spend lot of their time just outside their hole because they have a lot of enemy—fox, coyote, human, you name it. When they spot potential threat they bark to warn their neighbors and they escape down into their holes. Big deal! (了不起, 重要的人) You say, well, it turns out they can differentiate among predators. Research discovered that the barks differs from different predators. Coyote warnings are different from people warnings for instance. But it goes deep than that, there is actually evidence that the bark differentiate between individual predators of the same species. The research found for an example that the Takkkdogs had different barks for each member of the research team. What is the talk mainly about? According to the speaker what is the dogs provide an example of? What’s surprise the researchers about the dogs that they were studying Why does the lecturer compare dog to squirrels when they explaining what dogs look like? Professor, I am really sorry but my papers just not going to be finish this afternoon. Is there any way could you give me an extension. If I give one to you, I have to give one to everyone. What does the woman imply? You know how I can get to the research lab from here? Walking from here is out of the question, and the last bus out that way has gone already. Do you have the car? What does the woman imply? The chorus needs someone to accompany them on piano. You play, don’t you? Well, lately, I have just been working on the Guitar so I am a little rusty. What does the woman mean? Oh, I am glad that I find you. I left my notebook in the lab and it’s locked. We lock up all the room at 8 o’clock. But I need my notes I have an exam tomorrow. I can’t let anyone in, wait here and I will take a look by myself. What was the man probably do? All the photos I took on my trip with my new camera are ruined. For some reason the film didn’t advance through the camera. Well did you read the instruction carefully before using it? What does the woman imply? Hey! Jelly, I want to ask you for the washing machine in your dormitory are working because ours are broken for weeks, misXX can’t desXX for it. As far as we know they are, but why don’t you take your laundry over to the Gym to fix the problem, students are allowed to use the machines there. What does the woman suggest the man do? Thanks for lending me your chemistry study guide. I promise I return in the dinner. Forget it, I will be knocking at your door late tonight! What does the woman mean? I really not make any progress on this lab report, the data I collect so far just don’t seem to make myself sense! If you like, I can review what you have and then we can go over together. I appreciate the offer but I think I just need to keep checking away out on my own before I ask anyone else to take a look. check out 检查, 核对 What the woman probably do? Did you notice that the students concert at the next week? Notice? I am one from chorus club who will be taking tickets. What does the man mean? I sign up for that training course next Saturday for how to prepare for the job interview, how about you? If it is only an hour so I go, but I just can’t spare whole afternoon this weekend. I think it offer again next month so! What were the man probably do? I can’t find the book on the shelf, can you check the computer and see if it’s check out. I need it right away. It checked out but it’s another copy at the another library. I can get it for you about 2 days or you can driver over and get it yourself. What would the man probably do? Recently research indicates that commonly use models of intelligence are too narrow. Last time we began talking about Stun Berger 3 part models intelligence. You will recall that his theory include some aspects of intelligence that haven’t been considered in traditional intelligence testing. Today we will take up one part of Stun Berger theory. In this part, he tries to account for the relationship of intelligence to the environment. Intelligent people tend to use the environment to accomplish their goals. This is done in 3 ways by adapting to the environment, by changing the environment or by selecting out the environment. Let’s look at how it ?? affects case. Suppose your roommate always studies with radio aloud. You know that you need quiet in order to concentrate and thus use your study time effectively. You could try wearing your plug when you study that would be adaptation or you could set up a new study corner for yourself far from the radio that changing the environment. Finally, you could change the rooms and find a new roommate that is selecting out of the environment. Whichever solution you choose, you are showing intelligent behavior because you are aware (of) the effect environment has on you ability to study. Of course, you might say why don’t I just talk to my roommate about the problem. That bring us to the different part of Stun Berger Model—interpersonal intelligence. What ..the model What will the professor probably talk about next? Why is the professor talking about study problem? What is the advantage of Stun Berger’s model? Biology class We all heard the proverb “Beauty is only skin-deep” meaning that the outward appearance is not a valuable way to judge person’s worth but research studying why animals are attracted to each other had found that opposite may be true for animals. For them a beautiful face and body are reasonably reliable indicators of underline quality and experiments had shown that many species appear to look for at least one classic characteristic of beauty mainly symmetry. Now according to this theory, a more selective partner in the pair usually the female seek the maximum possible balance between the left and right half of the potential mate’s body. For an example, certain female birds first check to see if the male’s left wing is the same length and shape of the right to get clues about the bird’s health and strength. Now what other evidence do we have of this kind of behavior. Well, in one of experiments, researches put color bands on the legs of male finches. The female by far prefers the male with same color on both legs over those that has different color on each leg. Another experiment involve the male elks indicate the importance of symmetry in the antlers. Asymmetric antlers of course often indicate that the male has lost a fight to another male and he is SXX not the strongest. What is the main topic of the talk? What is the significance of the experiment in which color bands are put on finches. According to the speaker why is a pleasant appearance important to animals choosing mates. What do certain female birds look for in the wings of their potential mates? One of the things that I really have in trouble understanding is how Jazz music develop to be so different from many other kinds of music. My class notes are terrible. Well what can’t you understand on your notes? Omm.. One thing is I copy down the music training from blackboard. What did it mean by that? Well most people who become professional musician to have some kind of formal training in music but the first people who play Jazz music had almost not. Ok, but so what? Doesn’t it just mean that they weren’t very good musicians. Well, that’s not the early Jazz musicians weren’t good, it’s they play their instrument differently. Let’s you are receiving formal instruction in the trumpet. First you will right way to play it your own. And the right way to use your fingers and right way to blow air and then you will practise single notes and different combination of notes until you could do those correctly and only after that your teacher give you a piece of music to play. And the early Jazz musician didn’t learn to play this way? No the first people who play Jazz music learn to play their instrument by actually trying to play a song they like! They were ?/humility and try to play themselves on their instruments. Because they were mostly teaching themselves, they began to express themselves in ways that formally traditionally trained musician didn’t. In traditional instruction there are one correct way to play something and everyone who plays try to make the correct song. But in Jazz.. In Jazz music, there isn’t one right way to play. In fact, individual musician just suppose to interpret the music in their own style. So you say this aspect of Jazz developed because the first people who play Jazz didn’t have any formal music training. Well that’s part of it but there is more. What you still have on your notes. What are the students mainly discussion According to the conversation what ability did most early Jazz musician develop? According to the conversation how were the early Jazz musician different from other professional musicians. Excuse me! I need to copy a Steven Hokins a brief history of time. And I don’t know where to look for it? Did you check the status on the library’s computer? I try but I couldn’t figure out what to do. Well I can call it up right here. You wanted Hokins’ book right? It looks like it will be out for another 6 weeks. Oh no, I really need it for paper that due in 2 weeks. Is there anything that you can do? Sure, you can try to get it from the other library, just fill out this form and it should be here in 3 or 5 days. But it will cost 2 dollars. How to relief! That’s really help! Why does woman ask for help What does the man offer to do for the woman? Space science class One of the main causes of the environment pollution is the crisis of the commons. The crisis of the commons is the problem results when the part of environment is not own by anyone. Take a park, one reason that the park grounds are frequently more litter than people backyard is no owns them. People who throw the paper trash away in the park can walk away as nothing happened because the park is not theirs. A new extremely large crisis of commons that the astronomers are becoming increasingly aware of is the pollution in out-space. Since nobody own space, nobody has truly personal interesting to clean it up. The problem of space pollution is more acute than that in the park too because the inability space to clean itself up. The paper bank in the park will eventually disintegrate into its basic element but junk in space is unable to be broken down naturally by water and oxygen and so it stays there. Old satellites orbiting the earth out of control of space agency who launch them are the main sources of pollution in space. Collisions within the old satellites result them breaking up into smaller pieces. And these ?moto-plize the amount of free flowing litter. A piece of matter only ?decides a mobile impact against the large space satellite has the same force as the safe dropped off the roof of the skyscraper. One astronomer estimates that large space satellites orbiting the earth now stands a ten percent chance been hit by discard in space degree. What is the talk mainly about? What is the crisis of the commons? What does the professor say about the small piece of debris in space. According to the professor why do satellite collisions compound the problem of space pollution? Hey Kevin, I haven’t seen you since the beginning of the semester, how are you going? Well, I am a little overwhelmed. It’s strange I always want to go to the big university like this but now I am here, I am not so sure. You know the courses are interesting enough, but.. What’s bothering you then? Well after going to a small school and know everybody that’s a pretty shagged to be in huge lecture hall with hundreds students. I am not want the professor even knows my name. I know you mean. I am so pretty lost myself last year but I know about something that might help. It’s called the mental group. Though what? The mental group, It’s like a support group, I joined it last year when I was the first year student. So what is it? It’s basically professor and small group of students getting together informally to discuss all kinds of subject. You have the chance to meet professor and other students. Hm., sounds was wise, but doesn’t it take up a lot of studying time. Not really, you can study all the time you know and this is like a little break. I guess you could meet professor whose course you might take later! Exactly, that’s what happened to me! I am taking the psychology course of Professor Green. I didn’t know how interesting the psychology was. So I got to talk to him in the mental group. You XX. Is it too later to join. I don’t think so, if I were you I go over to the dean’s and signs up. I am going to the library to return the book but I can do it later I guess. What problem does the man have at the university? What does the woman suggest that the man do? I have been looking all over for Peter. I got the book of him that he left behind in the cafeteria. He might need it for his test tomorrow. I met him a few minutes ago and he said he was ahead for study hall at the students center. What was the woman probably do next? At this rate, I don't think I am ever going to get better on writing. My composition mark has been the same all semester. Straight “C” What did your instructor say keeping your marks down? What does the woman assume? I have to figure out the car runner shares for our trip to the lake. Should I count you in? I happy to report I am available. I finally caught up with my reading. What does the man mean? Hey! Marry, one of my students has decided to stop taking piano lessons from me, I could, if you allow on Tuesday from 8 ~ 9 if you wanted. Gee! Maybe I give you a wrong impression, I am not that serious about playing! What does the woman mean? Katy are working night and day to finish her documentary for film class. She could has been done by now, but she insists on so independent. What does the man imply katy should do? Did you hear that real professional theater company scheduled to perform right here on campus. You bet I did. I haven’t been excited by campus performance since the music 2 years ago. What does the man mean? Hi, Geen! Where have you been lately? I have been spending most of my afternoon in the psychology lab, I have no idea what I was getting into(陷入)when I signed up for this course. Yeah, I am just at that class last year and practically had to move into the lab. What does the man mean? Oh, Richard, I didn’t expect to see you today, I thought you work at the book store on Thursday afternoon. I do but I switching days with someone else so I can finish my lab report. I will be there on Saturday instead. What does the man mean? So our city clubs plan another fundraiser(.筹款, 募款), will you been in charge(主管, 看管)again this year? Unless I can get out of it! What does the man mean? I saw you note the bulletin board, I thought you already have the roommate. Oh, yeah, but he will graduate in June, So I thought I had better start looking for someone now. Well, the location couldn’t be better and the rent not that bad. What does the woman imply? I heard the modern art exhibition in the university museum is great and I am going to try to get there but I so busy with paper for my classes. Well, that weren’t be here much longer, you really ought to make time for it! What does the woman mean? USA history class Today we are going to look ?aware in which legislation can create practical problem which in turn to inventions to solve this problems. You will recall that the home-state acts at 1862 granted a hundred sixty acre plots to settlers. This resulted in considerable population growth in western plains. In that same year the construction of transcontinental railroad was set up by the pacific railroad act. This 2 pieces of legislation made the necessary for ranchers to limit the movement of their cattle instead of letting them roam freely. They weren’t many trees or rock to use for the fencing material so planting hedges was tried but they take long time to grow. Smoothly organized wire fence were another idea but they were not strong enough. Finally inspired by the reaction of cattles to the sharp thorns on vegetation, a new fence was invented--barbs, sharp, wire points like thorns were twisted onto wire fencing. Not everyone accept the invention right away, Texas were resistance until the young sales man stage the dramatic demonstration. He put up the career all of the new barb wire and challenge cattle owner to put their wild animals in it. Untrusting spectators get their distance as the cattle were driven into the inclosure. The animals charge the fence look quickly retreated. ??Taxings were sold and new fence soon became common throughout the plains. Why were wood fence not used in the west plains? What does the speaker compare barb-wire to? Why did the young sales man set up a demonstration in Texas? Why did the people who watch the demonstration stand at the distance? Didn’t you write about paper about Album Com last semester? Yes for my history of architecture class. Oh, I am taking it now and I have got XX research on industrial architecture. I need to read up on Com’s factories. So I would like to see what you wrote about them. I don’t think my paper will help, I focus on his classical design like Clement library and office buildings but you are interesting in the modernest building he is famous for. Yes he is best known for his factory. Especially the auto plants in Detroit he made a breakthrough in industrial design. You know before his time, factories are so cramped and inefficient but his factory provide enough light and air and open space. So the cars could be assembled in one huge plant. I remember reading that the factory should have to wooden frame and the heavy machinery making the building vibrates and there were fire-hazards too. But when Com start to design auto plants around the turn of the century, reinforced concrete has just been invented talk about the breakthrough. Not only was the building sturdy and fireproof but they were cheap to put up too! You seem to know a lot of about his industrial career. Actually even though I wrote about his other work, I did a lot of background reading. Let me see if I can dig up that paper for you. There were some books of articles include my dXX AgriXX but you might want to look up at the library. Why does the students discussion Com? To what industry does the Com make a major contribution? According to talk what was one problem before Com’s time? We have been looking at factors leading up to the American revolution, today I want to look more deeply into what the colonist in the 1700 century was thinking and feeling. What motivate them to change the political order violently--- less of money, social injustice, religious intolerance. Without question American colonists thought consulate return the political issues. They are concerned with not so much the economic problems and it is how the colonists wanted and indeed thought they deserved to live. In the other words, the American Revolution is about liberty the protection of personal liberty. You see the colonists sure to believe that was quiet radical at the time. They believe that person has rights and these rights were not based on the generosity of the king and they weren’t based on the language of the law. The colonists believed in the high law one that granted people rights. Rights that they were born with and which couldn’t be taken away by any human beings. Unless of course someone commit the crime and then they have to go through the proper legal steps. Now what were these rights. I will quote directly from the Declaration of Independence which states them clearly. “we hold these truth to be self-evident that all man are created equal and they are in done by their creator with certain XX of all right. among their life, liberty and pursue the happiness” the colonists had new vision what make political authority legitimate and what make personal liberty secure. Their vision was this, legitimate government require the consent of those who be in governed. So to understand how the events leads to the revolution, we need to understand specifically how political power had been exercised by the British in the colonies. Any ideas? What’s the lecture mainly about? Why does the professor quote from Declaration of Independence? What did the colonist believe was necessary for a government to be legitimate? What belief of the colonist does the professor say was the radical at the time of America revolution. Excuse me do you mind if I ask you a few questions? No I guess not. Great! This is for student concern report, we want to find out what the students think the campus food service the results would tell us what kind of changes to push for. I think everyone has pretty strong opinions about that. Yeah, that one thing I found out already. Ok, first how often do you eat in the cafeteria? Almost everyday, I have got a meal contract. And do you usually eat here at Anderson hall. Yeah, I live next door. And you mention that you have a meal contract, is that right? For breakfast and dinner, Monday to Saturday. What’s your general impression of the food here? Well, people complain a lot, but basically I think it’s ok. The vegetables are usually overcook, but I mean they had fed hundreds of people. You have own to get something fresh they prepare just for you. |
