They were the only universities in this group considered internationally outstanding in the last research assessment exercise. Excellent teaching was recorded at all the top 20 departments with the exception of Bristol and Cardiff, where it was satisfactory. Three new universities, Derby, Kingston and Plymouth, also achieved excellent ratings. The assessment of teaching in England is dated, but even in 1995 departments were complimented on their "robust" links with industry. |
