Although the top six places are filled by traditional universities, two former polytechnics make the top ten. Indeed, Central Lancashire shares with East Anglia and Keele the distinction of the best teaching quality assessment. Keele takes top place because it also ties with Nottingham for the best research grade. Of those listing American studies separately, Nottingham had the best-qualified entrants. Central Lancashire and Middlesex show the biggest rises, both up two places.
