Profile Sheffield is our University of the Year after a year in which it has built on its already impressive reputation. Everything about the university is high-class - teaching, research, facilities (academic, social and sporting) and the students themselves, who arrive bearing average A-level grades of ABB. Many do even better than that, so slouches need not apply.
Six subjects have been added to Sheffield's bulging portfolio of teaching assessments rated excellent in the past year, pushing the university into the elite top 10 UK universities in our table. Politics, philosophy, psychology, archeology, initial teacher training, and librarianship and information management are the recently top-rated subjects - 26 in total; seven with perfect scores. When you consider a further eight subject areas that missed the grade by a single point, Sheffield has one of the strongest teaching records of any British university.
The university is looking to the future with confidence. There are plans to invest up to £80m in new facilities, focusing on science and engineering. A £1m upgrade of the 1m-volume library is under way and healthcare and socioeconomic planning students will soon have a new £5m building.
Students love Sheffield. Although (bizarrely) applications dropped in both 2000 and 2001, competition is still fierce to get in. The city is the fifth-largest in Britain, with enough going on to keep both aesthetes and party animals occupied for three years. Many stay on after graduating and the dropout rate is one of the lowest.
The legacy of the World Student Games 10 years ago has endowed the city with sports facilities that compare well with any in the country. Students admitted next year will benefit from the £5m upgrade of the university's own sports centre. |
